County Prosecutor-Based Victim Advocates

ILLINOIS PROSECUTOR-BASED VICTIM ADVOCATE CONTACT INFORMATION

In Illinois, county prosecutions are headed by a “States Attorney” (other states call them District Attorneys or County Attorneys). Victim advocacy in most counties is primarily based out of those States Attorney’s offices (SAO), and includes usually services related to the trial of the offender. Below is the list of contacts that we currently have for those victim services based in counties around the state.

Sadly in Illinois, there are not a lot of services for many crime victims unless there is going to be a trial. So if the offender is never caught, or the offender dies, or the offender is quickly plea bargained, crime victims will not have as much access to any victims services through their county or any public governmental function.

The Attorney General’s office (see right sidebar) does have a Crime Victims Compensation Fund to assist with some basic services such as a funeral, time off work for trials, some counseling, etc. But the fund has a relatively low cap and restricted applications.

Many non-profits (see Resources page) offer private and specialized services for some forms of victimization such as rape, domestic violence, child abuse, etc. But they are not universal throughout the state, and struggle themselves for funding.

Larger counties like Cook and Winnebago have homicide support groups, and other such general victim services. If you have questions, contact your county’s States Attorney’s office and they can better refer you to what services are locally available.
